Baby Steps to Savings

Over the past few years, I’ve made it a priority to keep the question, “Is there a cheaper way to do this?” at the back of my mind. This has helped me identify many opportunities to save money with very little effort.

Making small changes will only save you a few dollars at a time, but that cash adds up! Here are some of my favorite “baby steps to savings.” Won’t you share yours in the comments?

  • Bake with powdered milk instead of fresh.

  • Turn the water off while you brush your teeth.

  • Halve the amount of meat you use in your favorite sauces or casseroles.

  • Drink water with dinner, instead of juice or soda.

  • Do your laundry in cold water (not a good idea if your clothes are extremely soiled, but otherwise works well).

  • Put a brick, or an empty milk gallon filled with water, in the toilet tank.

  • Skip desert a few times each week (frugal AND healthy).

  • Use towels more than once before washing them.

  • Only run the dishwasher or washing machine for a full load.

  • Reuse tinfoil whenever possible.

  • Turn off the lights every time you leave a room.

  • Take movies out of the library rather than renting.

  • Use less laundry detergent, dish soap, shampoo, or body wash than normal. The recommended amounts are usually excessive, anyway.

  • Pack lunches, snacks, and drinks for work as often as possible.

My husband likes to make a snack or lunch from time to time like frozen pizza. We use our toaster oven for small meals instead of eating up the whole oven for one little thing.

Thanks for your comment on my meal plan! I was laughing when I read your suggestion to reuse towels because I just can't even imagine washing towels every time you use them! I suppose some people probably do that... weird!

good ideas. :)

Love these ideas... I know they work because I do them, too! I love living a frugal life... to me, it is a fun challenge to see how much money and resources I can save!

Since I have small children, I only buy 100% concentrated juice that can be deluted- it goes a lot further and is MUCH healthier than expensive, sugar-laden "fruit drinks". I also use the clothes line a lot vs. the dryer (especially in warm weather months). There are SO many ways to be frugal if you really want to!
