Frosty Frugality

How many times have you opened a gallon of ice cream, only to discover that it had been left in the freezer too long and become an unappealing mess? This has happened to Donnie and me more frequently than I care to admit.

In the past, we always tossed what we considered to be “inedible” ice cream. After all, that familiar build-up of ice crystals doesn’t look very appetizing. Why would we even try to use that mess?

We wasted a good bit of food and money thinking like that. Fortunately, since resolving to live more frugally, we’ve changed our ways. Now instead of throwing away all that food, we just make milkshakes!

I’ve enjoyed enough milkshakes made from freezer-burnt ice cream to safely say that they don’t taste any different than those made from fresher ingredients. They’re extra yummy if you add chocolate syrup, a splash of vanilla extract, fresh or frozen fruit, cookie crumbs, whipped cream, peanut butter, honey, or whatever other delicious treats you have on hand.

Enjoy a tasty desert and prevent wastefulness? That works for me!

How do you use up food you would otherwise throw away? Leave a comment with your ideas!

Throw away ice cream? I would NEVER :)

I usually end up baking with stuff or making smoothies depending on what it is. But we rarely let stuff sit around long enough to get to that point ;)

What a great idea! We've tossed ice cream before. But now we try to use everything before it goes "bad". Love your blog - can't wait to read more!

Hi, I found you from your post on the Geezeo.com blog.
I've often heard of using old brown bananas in banana bread.
